Castle Rock Elementary School
Backpack Ministry

Initiated during the 2015-16 school year, this ministry provides weekend meals for homeless and in-need students at Castle Rock Elementary School. Because we depend on donations of food and cash to stock our pantry, we publish a shopping list to make it easy for donors to buy the food we need.

Every Tuesday, our team packs the backpacks, which are delivered each Wednesday morning. The bags, which vary in number throughout the school year, take about an hour to pack. A typical backpack contains two breakfasts, two lunches, two dinners, two to four containers of milk (various flavors), four to six snacks, and two desserts. We try to be as generous as possible, but the exact number of items packed each week depends on how much we have in stock that week.

During the 2017-18 school year, we delivered approximately 525 bags of food, consisting of 3,150 meals, to the in-need students in our neighborhood. We also provide special items for holidays and other special occasions.

Many of us in Castle Rock are blessed with abundance, but many are not so blessed. It is our mission to provide children with the sustenance they need to be as healthy as possible. We are blessed to be able to put these children’s hearts and minds at ease as they know they will not go hungry over the weekend.
