St. Clare’s Closet
For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you took me in. I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.Matthew 15:35-40
St. Clare’s Table is part of St. Clare’s Ministries. Beyond being served supper every Tuesday evening of every month, guests can avail themselves of donated clothing, blankets, shoes and toiletries from St. Clare’s Closet, which opens 30 minutes after supper is served. Christ’s Church volunteers are scheduled for the first Tuesday of the month and generally serve between 90 and 130 meals. If we have enough volunteers on hand, we will help in the closet.
Perhaps the location of St. Clare’s, which is one block West of Broadway on 2nd Ave and not in close proximity to lots of low rent motels or homeless shelters, has a lot to do with the fact that very few families with children are served there. The guests are, year in and year out, predominately single men of all ages.
Homelessness in Douglas County looks different than in inner-city Denver. The majority of the homeless here “sofa surf,” meaning they temporarily stay with family or friends until they wear out their welcome and move on. That being said, sadly there are 900 students in Douglas County who meet the criteria for the designation of homeless.
