Oakwood Apartments
A Ministry to Low-income Seniors
It is hard to imagine living in our community on less than $10,000 a year, but that is the challenge facing many of the residents of the Oakwood Apartment Community for low-income seniors. The Christ’s Church outreach ministry to the Oakwood is now in its fifth year. Our goal is to hold one event for the residents each month, in their community, hosted by volunteers from the church.
The events we hold range from full meals served in the Oakwood community room to movies with popcorn. We create, and deliver to each resident, bags filled with treats for Valentines, Easter and Halloween. In each of the four months a year that has five Fridays, we serve the residents a Fifth Friday Supper. Months with five Fridays really challenge meager food budgets, which usually only have to stretch and cover four weeks. Thus the hearty meals we provide are most welcome those months.
Volunteers often come away from an Oakwood event feeling as though they have made a positive, uplifting contribution to a community that is too often disrespected and ignored. No special talent or gifts are needed to be a volunteer; just an open, compassionate heart is all that is required.
If you would like to support this ministry by volunteering to host, to provide food, to set up or clean up, or to serve, please contact the church office for more information.
